Olympic champion Chris Hoy’s latest book, How to Ride a Bike, has published this week with Hamlyn, an imprint of Octopus Publishing Group.

The six-time Olympic gold medallist has created a comprehensive manual for cyclists of all ages, experience and ability to guide them to their peak performance level alongside stories and anecdotes from Sir Chris Hoy’s phenomenal career.

The book is structured by three sections which come together as the ultimate cycling toolbox; Technical (bike fit, safety, skills and care), Physical (strength and conditioning, training theory, performance cycling demands, training programmes, performance eating) and Mental (cycling goals, sports psychology, mental techniques). In the physical section, Sir Chris identifies the five key abilities of cycling fitness, defined as the maximum effort possible to maintain for certain periods of time; 6 seconds (max springing), 30-60 seconds (sub-max sprinting), 3-5 minutes (VO2 max), 1 hour (zone of transition), several hours (long steady distance cycling).

A masterclass from a cycling champion that equips readers, beginners or cycling pros alike, with the tools and tips needed to reach their peak performance

‘Chris is someone I’ve always looked up to. Not just because of his many successes but the way he is as a guy. He hasn’t changed since I first met him, and he always has time for anyone. A true role model.’ – Geraint Thomas, 2018 Tour de France winner.
